A piece of your heritage - Part 1

LAURA PHOEBE HAWS was born February 10, 1885 in Pima, AZ. When she was 6 months old, her polygamy parents took her to Mexico. Her father (William Wallace Haws) had 2 wives and children. The church had sent them to Arizona to colonize that area. When polygamy was outlawed in the U.S., he was told to go to Mexico. His older wife (Barbara Mills) told him to take the younger wife Martha Barrettand children and go to Mexico. She stayed in Arizona to work the farm with her sons who were old enough to help her.

Laura’s first home was a dugout, which they left after an earthquake in 1987. They camped under a pine tree in a tent until her father could build a log cabin. Laura remembers being very poor. They ate cornbread and Piloncello (a hard brown sugar), and a little milk when the cow was fresh. Sometimes they had mushroom soup when mushrooms could be found. Later they raised cane and had syrup. Eventually, they raised a garden and had their animals.
When they lived in the hills of Corrales and Kay Valley, trouble with Indians and the Mexicans were common and very frightening.
Laura was 10 when they moved to Pacheco, after her father’s death in 1895. There were nine children. Laura was the oldest girl, with 3 older brothers and 2 younger brothers and 3 younger sisters ranging in age from 16 to less than one year. She was a mother to them all. Even with such responsibilities, she was able to find time to get into trouble. She and 2 friends took a burro out to ride and they rode it a straddle. In those days, that was most unladylike and they were scolded about that. When her friends were herding calves on the hillside and she wanted to go, she got the buggy, bottles, and babies, and off she went. The girls were also got caught “lifting their skirts” and jumping stumps.

WARREN ELLIS HARDY was born January 26, 1883 in St. George, Utah. When he was 9 years old, his father (Warren Hardy) died and his mother (Martha Aurelia Johnson) took him, 2 brothers and a sister to live with her family in Mesa. After the death of his mother (which happened on the 29th of October 1900 when he was 17 yrs old), Warren was taken to Mexico to live with his Grandpa, Josiah Gile Hardy. While living in Mexico, he worked on a farm and learned carpentry and blacksmith. There isn't a lot of information on Grandpa as a child and it has been said that he was not a very approachable man but that it was known that he did have a deep love for his family.

It has also been said that the first time he ever saw Grandma she was walking down the street with a group of girls and he was walking with a group of boys and as they passed eachother he said to his friends, "There is the girl I am going to marry". Warren Ellis Hardy and Laura Phoebe Haws were married in Colonial Juarez, Mexico in 1906 after a courtship mostly by mail. Laura and Warren’s first home was with Laura’s mother Martha, sleeping in a cellar. They eventually moved to a log cabin, which they partitioned off for a kitchen. Finally, after 4 children, they took time off for a honeymoon. They went on a hunting trip!
They had acquired a farm, orchard, and a blacksmith shop and they had 5 children when word came they had to leave Mexico. This was in 1912 and there was unrest in Mexico. Pancho Villa and his bandits were threatening lives. They were only allowed to take two small trunks, leaving all their possessions. The men stayed behind, sending the women and children ahead. Laura ended up in El Paso, Texas with the 5 children, along with about 2,000 other women and children. They lived in tents in the lumber yard for a while, then ended up in Mesa. Warren, who had stayed behind in Mexico, rode horseback to St. George, Utah trying to find his family. Months later they met in Mesa and finally ended up in Tucson, where their family increased by 8 more children. Warren was a blacksmith and a farmer. He and Laura raised their children in Tucson. They were both life-long members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Warren - Dad - Grandpa - Great-Grandpa - passed away November 10, 1956 at the age of 72. He loved us all in his special way, mostly from his little house in the backyard. As a grandchild (Jerry Lee speaking) we always felt deeply loved by him.

Laura - Grandma - Great-Grandma - passed away October 16, 1964 at the age of 79. She had lots of love to give and she gave it all. She cared for about 17 children, full and part time, her children, the grandchildren, and others she helped to care for. She made them all feel very special.

Grandma started having the family come together for reunions in 1952. The reunions started at Grandma and Grandpa’s home in Binghamton which is just outside of Tuscon at 3443 E. Lind.

Family Update

Yvette Stephens (George, Maureen) graduated from Northern Maine Community College on May 14, 2011. She now has an Associates Degree in Accounting Information Systems. She will be starting undergraduate classes next week where she will be working toward a Bachelor's degree in Accounting. (side note: her granddaughter graduated from preschool the same weekend that Yvette graduated from college).
Yvette also wanted to share that she is in an alternative metal band, Paradyghm Shift. They are currently working on original tunes and hope to be performing by the end of July at the local battle of the bands. Yvette is the lead vocalist and flute player.

Wow Yvette, sounds like great things are in store for you, keep up the good work and keep us posted

Leane (Loran, Charley) reports that she and her husband Ted welcomed a beautiful baby boy into their family on February 8, 2011 at 11:58pm. He weighed 8 pounds 2 oz and was 20" long. We named him Ted Lee Alldaffer III and he is the apple of our eye. He is a very happy, content baby that only cries when he's super hungry. The rest of the time he smiles and coos and we get a kick out of some of his funny facial expressions.

Mission Update

It was great to get an update from Loran (Charley) and Kathy Hardy. Here is what they have to say.

The first picture attached was taken right after we arrived. We are in a rural area on Long Island in a town called Riverhead. It is beautiful here. The two branches were excited to have us come. They were very welcoming. We were asked to be leadership support for two branches that were meeting in the church building next door to us. Our branch area includes the North Arm of Long Island which includes Greenport and the South arm of Long Island which includes the Hamptons and Sag Harbor and Montauk. We do a lot of traveling. Sense we have been here they moved one of the Branches to Hampton Bays to be closer to the membership. Elder Hardy was called to be the Branch Mission Leader in both branches. We correlate with the 8 other missionaries in our area. (The second picture was taken after district meeting.) We teach an Institute class on Tuesday nights on the Doctrine and Covenants. We work in the Manhattan Temple on Wednesdays. That is quite a commute. We travel to Queens, park at the mission office and catch a subway to the temple. The Temple is across the street from Julliard. We are involved in many ways with the branches. It is great knowing the people we have met here and associating with the missionaries, going teaching with them and seeing the mission miracles. Elder Hardy is helping take down the stalls in the horse barn that is in back of our house. The Stake President wants to remodel it for a larger place to have activities. The missionaries have been helping. There are sister missionaries that even got involved. I will attach that picture also. Elder Hardy has really been enjoying working out there in the barn when ever time allows, usually in the mornings. He is looking forward to helping build some handcarts for the up coming trek this summer when they get the rest of the rubble hauled out of the barn. They will work on those there. We are feeling well and having a wonderful time. Love from Elder and Sister Hardy

Baby News & more

A big congratulations going out to Brook (Bobby, Alonzo, Maurine) & Josh Warnberg who recently had a new baby boy. Welcome to Joshua Ryker Warnberg, Jr. who was born at 4:59pm on Jan. 25, 2011. He weighed in at 6 lbs 10 oz and was 18" long.

He has 2 older sisters Ashlynn and Kaycee and 2 older brothers Caden and Gabe. He will certainly be well loved, no doubt about it.

Brook reports that her husband Josh is being awarded the purple heart for injuries he got in a mortar attack in Iraq on Feb. 15th. He hasn't received the purple heart yet but as soon as he does I will get a picture to you.

We are so glad that you are ok Josh and will all hope to meet you at the family reunion this year. Looking forward to the next update & pctures.

New News

Trevon (Richard, Jerry, Oliver) was recently in his schools performance of 'Hello Dolly'. It was many hours of hard work and it paid off. It was a fabulous performance.

and with his Grandma Turley who came to support him among many other family members.

Trevon also recently auditioned for the Regional Honor Band. He was selected and received second chair. We are very proud of him!

Jaron & Trevon both tried out for the boys volleyball team at their High School. Jaron made the varsity team and Trevon made JV. It is going to be a busy spring.

There hasn't been a whole lot of news lately and I have had several people comment on how they miss it, so...... I know that your kids have been up to great things as well. Please, send it in and lets share in these great accomplishments.

Mission Call

Loran(Charley) & Kathy received their mission call on the 17 of Sept. to the New York, New York South Mission. The mission consists of Long Island, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and Bermuda. Kathy writes that they were pretty excited and also felt a little bit out of their league going from a small town to a mission of 8 million people. We felt a little better when we found out that we would probably be located on the East end of Long Island in a rural area called Riverhead. We will report to the MTC on the 18th of October. We will be there for 5 days and then drive to NY from there. Love, Kathy

Firework Sales in Vegas

First of all a 'HUGE' thank you to ALL who came & helped with the sales of fireworks this year. As a reminder this event is what pays for our Reunion every year as well as helping to support any family members who serve a mission. Below is one of the 4 booths that was manned by approximately 25 family members and a few friends.

It was a successful year and a full report will be given at the reunion.
Also, a BIG thank you to Bobby & Alonzo for ALL of the work that they put into this every single year. It is a big undertaking, more than we even know.

It is not a cake walk by any means. It is HOT for one thing and it is a really LONG day for everyone. They finished at approximately 11:00 each night.

These kids sure make the hard work fun!

There were 2 birthdays while we were there. Sorry Ryan Morse, I don't have a picture of you but he turned 20. Jaron Turley turned 16 while there and we had cake at about 11:00 that night when all of the hard workers started to return to Bobby's house.

Here are some of the tuckered out workers after a long, hot day. Bobby was very generous once again by opening his home to everyone. There were beds and bodies everywhere but they sure had fun.

Once again, thank you so much for ALL who came. You know that you want to be there next year. Plan now, mark your calendar and commit to come and help even if only for a few days.

Especially if you have a family member serving a mission who is benefiting from all this hard work. Please try to have atleast one person there for the firework sales.

and the other great news....

Scarlett Josephine Williams was born on April 9th, 11:29 am 7lbs 13oz. It was easy breezy and we got to take her home when she was less than a day old. This was very unlike her sister's delivery which was horrible and she was transferred to another hospital for 32 days! We feel so blessed to have had a commotion free birth this time! It was a huge, huge, huge blessing for us!

Eagle Scout Project

Tanner Morse would like you all to know that his eagle scout project will be held at the Binghamton cemetery on the dates of March 13th and 20th from about 8am to 12pm. We will be installing a 21 foot archway with a sign over the entry way. We will also be installing a fifty foot hand rail that goes up to the flag pole dedicated to our own George and Ellis Hardy making it more accessible for you older folk, ha. We will also be doing some grave clean up and some other little things at the entrance. This will be a wonderful opportunity to be able to beautify and make this cemetary even more special. If you are able to come please bring gloves and safety glasses. Wear closed toed shoes and rakes, shovels and sun screen would also be good things to bring.

A true Christmas gift

We had a very blessed event occur in our family on December 18, 2009. Lori Hardy Leduc (Robert, Charlie) selflessly donated a kidney to our son Travis (Loran, Charlie).

The day Travis was first put into the hospital to begin dialysis; Loran & Kathy traveled from Winslow to Mesa to be with him. Through a series of events, Lori found out why they were in the valley and that none of Travis’s family had his blood type. She did have the blood type needed and offered to be a donor at that time. What a ray of hope this was!

After four months of dialysis for Travis, lots of testing for both Travis and Lori, and a last minute surgery to remove a kidney stone for Lori, it was finally decided that they could go ahead with the surgeries on the 18th of December. Lori was in the hospital for nearly three days and Travis was there for five days. So far both Lori and Travis seem to be doing well and are continuing to heal and get stronger. The kidney function of the donated kidney is presently functioning in the normal range.

It was a true Christmas gift and a blessing beyond measure! We will always be grateful to Lori, her family, and extended family for their sacrifices. We recognize all that they did and went through for the great gift of hope and a better life that was freely given to Travis.

Doris Messinger reports that Matthew Todd Miller (Lynette, Patsy, Marie) had a stroke on Friday night and is in Northwest Hospital. It was an aneurysm in the bottom part of the brain that affects the equilibrium. They did surgery on him last night and removed a part of his skull and found a part of his brain that was dead that they removed. He was responsive to the doctor's after the surgery, like they asked him to squeeze his hand and told him to put up two fingers and he did this. Right now it is wait and see. So, he needs all the prayers that he can get. Most of the family is at the hospital and the Bishop and counselor has been there to give him blessings.

* I (Marcy) just spoke with Daniel (Matthew's brother) and he said that he is currently stable and they are beginning to wean him off of the respirator. Daniel also asks that we please include Matthew in our prayers. You got it! Keep us posted. Thank you.

Elk Accident

Mark was driving 65 mph this morning when a herd of seven elk ran out from over a big hill and they ran right into him. These are some pictures of the accident this morning. He was driving from Show Low to Payson at 6:45 am. All seven elk were killed and two of them were lodged underneath the front of the car when Mark skidded into the side of the mountain and into a ditch. They were his cushions! Two elk came up over his hood and smashed into his window and the other three went flying over the car and into the highway. They had to shut the road down so they could get the elk out of the way. It looked like a war zone. There was one male, four females and two calves. The pictures are very sad to see. The front and side airbags were deployed and except for a few minor burns and cuts, Mark walked away from this without any injuries. A man that worked for the Forest Service said that he has never, ever, seen anyone kill seven elk with one vehicle and walk away from it. He told me that Mark holds the record. After the accident, Mark said that some of the local hunters came out with trucks and ATV’s & even a tractor with a scoop on it, and they took away all the elk. At least they are getting some good elk steaks to feed their families. What was funny was that the Fish & Game people showed up at the scene and gave Mark “elk permits” because they said that the elk were his! But, of course, he had no way to transport them back home, so they were given to the other people.

The elk incident in the AZ Republic last week described the wrong location. The paper said this accident occurred between Payson and Star Valley. It actually happened between sharp creek bridge and Colcord ADOT yard, underpasses here but no fencing…

Jaden receives his mission call

A thought for the blog

Last Week when I was scanning the frozen food section in the grocery store, a little tear-streaked face came running towards me. I scatted down on the floor and held out my arms catching the little traveler and asked, "Are you lost?" The dark little head nodded. "Let's go find your mom." I said. I took his grubby little hand and headed for the front of the store, when a voice came from behind us calling the little fellow's name. We stopped and turned around. There was a dad coming swiftly towards us holding out his arms. I let go of my new friend's hand and he rushed to his father, who promptly picked him up, held him close and spoke reassuringly to him that all was well. The little guy hung tightly to his dad's neck as we visited for just a moment, then we each went on our way. I've thought about that incident all week. How many times do we become lost, not intentionally, but still lost? Do we have someone to help us find our Father?
We are family. Thanks for your messages of love, achievement and and sorrow. They help keep me from getting lost. I am strengthened by your inspirational experiences through this family blog that Marcy so beautifully puts together. Through your messages I hear our Father call each of our names.

Baby Girl

Elizabeth May Miller was born in Phoenix, AZ on August 12 to Scott and Emily. (Shara Dawn, Kaye, Oliver). She weighed 6 lbs 13 oz and was 20 1/2 inches long. I don't have any pictures yet. She is a cute little pot-licker as Papa and Aunt Bobbie would say.

A move

Jonathan (Kaye, Oliver) and Nichole moved to Tulsa OK in August. Jonathan is working as a mechanic for a Chrysler dealership and Nicole is working in the medical field. They love the country, especially the hunting and fishing. Attached is a picture entering Keystone Park where Jonathan says there is great fishing.

Bible Bee Contestants

Yesterday was the big day for my kids. We registered for the Bible Bee back in April and the contest finally happened yesterday. The woman running the contest at the church in Phoenix said she had 98 kids registered and then 62 said they were actually coming. However, only about 40 really showed up. My kids and the kids we talked to all said that it was really hard. The material they were given to study was 450 Bible verses/passages. Some passages were 9 verses long! They were also given about 300 general knowledge questions. That's a lot of material to learn! Then they took a 200 question written test and had two oral rounds where they were asked 4 multiple choice questions and asked to recite 4 Bible verse/passages. There were kids there who were better prepared than my two and they said they couldn't answer a lot of the memory work. It's very difficult to just pull a verse and reference out of your head! All in all, we were very proud of all the kids and their families who made the commitment and followed through on it. We'll find out the results this week.

Hello everyone, Wally came home from the hospital today. His leukemia has progressed to the point where they wanted to give him stronger chemo or at the least chemo where he would have to get two shot subq every day for 21 days every month. This chemo may or may not make him sick but it would kill all the blood cells and put him really prone to infection and possibly being sick. He decided NOT to have anymore chemo. We will let the doctor know on Monday about his decision and find out about getting Hospice at home.The kids are planning a get together for all those that want to come and see him before things get real bad. This get together will be next weekend, Aug 29 and 30th at our house in Farmersville. Anyone can come anytime after 1 on those days. If you want to bring a dish you can or you don't have to. We just want him to know that there are people that care about him and support his decision, because this was a hard decision for him to make. If you need our address please let me know and I will give it to you. This has been a very hard year for Wally and I. Every time he went in the hospital I was with him 24/7 unless I got sick, which I did a couple of times. Since June 8 when he got his last chemo we have only spent 2 weeks total at home. The rest of the time has been spent in the hospital. I think he is a peace with this decision and I am dealing with it. He is happy to be home. I will keep everyone updated as much as I can.

Update on Wally

Good morning friends and family I have probably told some of you this already but can't remember who, so here goes. Wally is home from the hospital again. This stay was from July 13th thru July 24th. He received 3 units of platelets during this stay, one was on the 13th, one was on the 20th and the last was the 23rd. His platelets did not go above 36. He received Neupogen shots everyday which helped with his white count which went up to 5.4 which is good. He has a doctor appointment on Monday to see what his CBC is and we will go from there. Dr Rizvi, his oncologist said that he can do his platelet transfusions on an out patient basis.

Please keep him in your prayers.

Richard & Marcy Turley have been asked to do the kids games this year at reunion. We are planning to do it the same way it was done last year.

There were multiple activities going on for one hour. The kids could go from one activity to another and again if they wanted to. Tickets were given out to the kids for participating. There was a prize booth where they could then go and spend their tickets.

It worked really well and everyone seemed to enjoy it, even the teenagers!

Many of you helped run the booths last year and it was great! We are looking for more help this year. Here's what we need.

1. Someone to come up with a game or activity idea and bring what is needed to make that happen.

2. Being responsible for getting people to work your game or activity during the full hour.

3. Contact Richard or Marcy at turleymr3@msn.com to make sure your idea is not already being done. We even have ideas for you if you would just be willing to put it together. There is a budget that we are working with but you can definately be reimbursed for any expenses you incur (within budget of course).

We have all of the prizes taken care of - you will not need to worry about that.
So, what do you say family? Please contact us right away so we can be prepared and make it as fun as possible for these kids.
Oh, and one more thing..... does anyone in the family know how to do face painting? It doesn't have to be this extravagant. Please let us know. turleymr3@msn.com

Africa Trip

Most of the family knows that a bunch of us went to Africa in 2007. Some of you know that I have been there two times prior. After visiting “The Dark Continent” and experiencing the adventure that is Africa, I wanted to share it with as many people as possible but mostly my best friends and family.

21 hours on United flight…whatever from Atlanta Georgia to Johannesburg South Africa, here we all are. Only one more flight and an 8 hour bus ride to camp…….holy cow we are tuff!

Some of the best times of my life have been with this group so naturally theses are the people I wanted to share my experiences. I felt a heavy responsibility to the group to show a good time after convincing them to spend the money, no small potato’s. The toughest sale was my niece Krysti and my dad. Krysti was on again off again at least 3 times before committing to the trip, I am glad she went, few people will share an adventure with their Grandpa as special as this. A memory of a lifetime! Both Krysti and Pop went as “non hunters” and were along for the ride as did my wife MaryAnn. The nice thing about being a non hunter is that it allows you to hunt with different people and see different animals and areas.

Each group or hunter was escorted by a “Professional hunter” and his personal team of Tracker’s. The PH and his trackers job is to provide anything and everything that you might imagine. During a “plains game” hunt the trackers will hang a mile or so from the action unless called upon to track an animal or in my case while hunting Cape Buffalo Leopard, or any other dangerous game the trackers provide extra backup with very large rifles. While hunting the open bush country where one might encounter Elephant, Buffalo Lions or both Black and White Rino, the big guns might come in handy! We will revisit this subject again!

Hunting leopard over bait sounds much simpler that it is. As if it weren’t tough enough sitting TOTALLY silent in TOTAL darkness sixty feet form a chunk of Zebra that you know for a fact has at least one leopard feeding on it sometime during the night, you do it under the constant threat and worry of being discovered by lions or elephants, after all the lions don’t know or care that bait is for the leopards and not them. While sitting totally silent (and I do mean silent) with total sensory deprivation your ears search the night for sounds that might hint to the approach of whatever might be out there. Without fail you hear nothing! Until the bones start crunching on the bait, if a lion or leopard figured you out and decided to eat you instead you would know nothing about it until he had you by throat!

All of the hunting I have done all over the world barley prepared me for the night it all came together…the first time. I got plenty of advice and direction from buddies that have hunted leopard but they never warned me that the first time I would see one of the big cats would be thru the sites of my bow when the lights came on! When hunting leopard with a bow you sit motionless until you hear the cat on the bait. While he is busy eating the bait you draw the bow and aim in the direction of the target, then the PH turns the flash light on and looks at the cat to make sure it is a male, all the while I’m aiming at the cat, awaiting the command Shoot…or Do Not Shoot. Once the arrow leaves the bow…all heck breaks loose, roaring, snarling and brush crashing…but just for a second or two, and then total silence. The light goes out, and then total darkness! Tracking a wounded Leopard in the daylight is very dangerous…nighttime is suicide!

“Where did that arrow go? asked Glenn, My PH”
“I have no idea! Somewhere over there, that was the worst shot I have ever made!

Glenn radioed the trackers and we stayed in the blind until they arrived. After a short discussion, and I have no idea what they said because I don’t speak Shanngan, but I’m sure it was something like, ”can you believe that big tall sissy missed?” Careful not to venture to far into the night, a moment later one of the trackers returned with the news that he had found blood in a leopard spoor (track) indicating that the arrow had hit the cat. We tracked the wounded leopard about 50 yards into the African night before Glenn decided it was to dangerous, we would return in the morning.

The following morning we returned to the bait and blind and to everyone’s surprise the cat had returned sometime during the night and finished off the bait, the wound must be slight, Said Glenn the trackers followed the spoor into the bush while I located the arrow which had passed thru or grazed the leopard. Incredibly, the trackers were able track where the cat had made a 200 yard loop into the bush and back to within 30 yards of the bait where he laid for some time and watched the bait before continuing to feed. From my point of view it appeared that he was laying in wait hoping to ambush us as we attempted to track him. In reality the nervous cat probably laid and watched the bait, confused as to what all of the commotion was about he most likely watched until he was comfortable that the threat was gone. You see, the Lions will ambush leopards so they are very leery when approaching a kill. Three nights later I got another chance.

Different animals visit the water daily. Each evening, after the hunt we all met in the lounge and exchanged stories while sitting around the fire. By the end of the trip each of us had stories special and unique, everyone could relate because we encountered all of the same critters.

On Safari! You might see some cheetahs or maybe some Cape buffalo, Above is a White Rino but they have black ones too, but if you encounter one of those your on your own, they are so rare the professional hunters are not allowed to shoot them even in self defense.

As one might imagine there is a lot more story and adventure than I could ever tell in one small article. The story of Zimbabwe and it people is sad to say the least, their economic crisis is beyond the wildest dreams…or nightmares of any American. Up until sometime in the 70s the country was knows as Rhodesia. People in Africa Remember fondly the days of Rhodesia and speak of the days when the country was the “Bread Basket” of the continent, almost literally it feed the Dark Continent with its farming, cattle, and sheer industrial horse power. During it’s hay day the Rhodesian Dollar was stronger than the US dollar.

Rik Matthews decided that beer, soda and water might be nice to have during our travels. Our bus driver took us to one of the big hotels in Harare where we exchanged some of our South African money (rand) for a few Zimbabwe dollars (Zim-bucks) as I remember we got about 2.5 million Zim-bucks in 100,000.00 bills that was worth about 100 US dollars.

So there we were driving across Zimbabwe with a cool 2 million dollars to spend, the problem was there was nothing to buy. The first store we stopped at had a few bottles of water and that was it! Finally we did find a few bottles of beer and some soda pop at a little roadside store and bar…we made Rik go in while the locals gathered around our bus.

After a little coaxing Pop convinced this little guy to take some chocolate and in perfect English these girls said “Thank you very much sir”

During or stay almost all of the food and supplies were smuggled into Zimbabwe and paid for with foreign currency. Plain and simple, no one wants your zimbucks

Cemetery’s, are every place you look, the AIDs epidemic is very real. There simply are no old Africans in Zimbabwe, the county is run by 30 year old people.

That is one tough birthday cake, does anyone have a chain saw?

Not many people can say that they have had a birthday party while in Africa. Someone let the cat out of the bag and told the camp host that Cindy and I had back to back birthdays during our stay so one night they baked us a cake…Well, really they iced a section of elephant dung and sang “Happy Birthday” while we tried to cut it, tough……..stuff!!!

With our Trip coming to a fast end we all discussed what had been of our favorite events or things that had happened. Curiously, Pop said “I hope the best is yet to come” Sure enough, we arrived at camp the last night to find the furniture cleared and most of the Senuko residents were on hand to perform native Shangaan dances and music.

Glenn later shared with me that the families asked if they could do a small presentation as a thank you for bringing the school supplies which we all brought in our luggage. It was a great show and we all thought it was the best part of the trip!

As the trip grew to a close we pondered the long journey home with some concern to the long bus ride back to Harare. Non of us were to excided about the bus ride back, originally the ride was to take 5 hours but it had taken us more like eight, that much time home plus any delay and we could miss our flight. None of us liked the idea of spending the night in and flying back to the US on standby. We had already paid for the bus charter so we decided to send our gear ahead the night before and charter two single engine Cessna 206s to fly us out directly out of camp.

Early the last morning the bush planes arrived on the dirt strip about a mile from camp where all of the trackers and PHs gathered to say “fair well.” You where a heavy heart when you say good by to these people, there is an uncomfortable sense that you are leaving a part of your family to the wolves… that is life in Zimbabwe!

After strapping into the seats the pilots completed their preflight check list and turned the noses of the Cessnas down the runway in single file behind PH’s racing their land cruisers down the strip ahead of the two heavily loaded aircraft to clear the runway of any Buffalo or giraffes that might run in the path of departing 206s.

The planes buzzed the tree tops at the end of the strip where the group of trackers and their families had gathered to wave goodbye. We all left a small piece of ourselves right then and there!

Thank you for sharing this trip with us Tracy. We learned alot of really neat things about Africa. Very entertaining as well as educational.

Update on Wally

Wally came home from the hospital last night, Friday the 12th of June. He had 5 days of chemo in a row. No nausea, no vomiting and an appetite like you would not believe. But he only gained 5 pounds from when he went in til he weighed this morning. He only got the fluids from the chemo and saline and after each chemo he was off the IV. That was so nice not being hooked up to that IV 24/7. He did great and I am so proud of him. He is doing great. His blood sugar is back down today which is good because last night it was in the 300's. So just want to let everyone know that we are back home. Thanks again for all of your thoughts and prayers and I am glad that we missed the storm here because our power went out here at the house. Of course we had the storm in Mckinney and had a tornado warning. First they came in the room and moved his bed next to the door because we were in an isolation room and there were two doors to get to him. Then not two minutes later they came in and moved him in a wheelchair out in the hall. By the time they got everyone in the hall the warning was over and we went right back in the room. It was interesting. So all in all, he did great. Love you all, Judy Messenger

Wally update

Good morning everyone,We took Wally to the dr yesterday. He wanted to know if Wally wanted chemo and explained to him that if he gets the chemo he will be subjected to a lot of infections because his immune system will be so low. The last time Wally got an infection, we almost lost him, but we didn't find this out until we were ready to be discharged. The dr said that what Wally has in not curable and we have decided to go with the neupogen shots and blood transfusions as long as his counts are doing good. Wally went a week without shots or blood and his counts are holding. He got a neupogen shot yesterday and he goes in the hospital tomorrow for two units of blood.The dr said that if his counts get real low than they will do the chemo again. Wally gets the shots when ever the clinic has some left over so it isn't every day. But so far so good. Thank you all for your prayers. I hope this made sense because I am not real good at putting things on paper.

New Baby

This is our newest (15th) great grandchild. His mom is Jeanna (Debbie, Wally, Marie). They named him Samael Constantine Jordan, he was born at 12:22pm on April 8th, 2009. He weighed 7lb 7oz and was 20 1/4 inches long. He has Marques' blue eyes and Jeanna's nose. He has been very alert and active since being born, already holding his head up fairly well and can roll from his back to his side.

Also Debbie had her gall bladder out the end of April and is doing fine and back at work.

He is darling! Thanks for the update Judy & glad everyone is doing well.

Fireworks

Many family members are still needed to help work the fireworks booths. The dates for selling are from June 28th to July 4th. We do not expect anyone to come for the entire time. We can use help for 1, 2, 3 or however many days you are able to come & help. This is what pays for our reunion each year which we all enjoy. From porta potties to food and many things in between. 70 years young

Jerry Lee (Oliver) just recently turned 70 years young. We wanted to share with you her family some pictures of Jerry Lee enjoying the Hardy reunion over the years. It is something she looks forward to every year. Everybody knows Jerry Lee as she always makes her way through each camp visiting with all who come. I'm sure this year will be no different.

This last year Richard & Mike really teased her good about her fly traps. She had hung bags of water all around her camp site because she had heard that it would keep the flies away. Well...they took it a step further and made her a PFD (Personal Fly Defense). Here she is laughing right along with them as they demonstrate how it works.

You can always count on a campfire at her campsite thanks to Uncle Buster. She might be asleep but she'll be there as long as someone else is still up.

She loves to tube down the creek. She does it every year.
I'm sure this is familar to many of Hardy reunion regulars. Many of family members have been fed from this camp.

A new graduate

Just wanted to let everyone know that I (Melissa Messinger) graduated from University of Rio Grande on May 9, 2009 with my associate of nursing degree. Now I am studying for my NCLEX exam which will make me elgible to recieve my RN license. I am glad that my dad Art Messinger and my brother David Messinger and his wife and kids and his wife's brother came out it was great. All my kids were there but one. It was nice to have family around for a change.

Update for Jennifer (Kaye, Oliver) and Joseph Yost's family – Their daughter Megan will be graduating from High School on May 19th. She will be attending NAU in the fall along with her brother Brandon who has spent the last two years at Glendale Community College. Brandon was accepted into NAU’s School of Music. This is also a big year for Naomi as she will be attending her first year of girls camp. Unfortunately, it is the same weekend as the reunion.

Hi all. Linda (Messinger) Gomez here (Gilbert, Marie) with news from our corner of the world. My daughter, Ashley, just officially joined the ranks of "teenager" on April 2nd. She turned 13. We are very proud of her success in school and with her Youth Group and Sunday School (she is learning the puppet ministry). Our son, Joshua, will be turning 9 on the 17th of April. He recently competed in Awana Bible Quizzing, where clubbers answer questions based on their Awana Handbooks and general Bible questions. He was on a team of three and they came in First Place. We had two other teams from our church competing, and one took First Place and one took Second Place. Joshua was the only boy that did the quizzing, so we were especially proud of how brave he was. We were very proud of all of the quizzers.Ashley and Joshua, along with several other members of our church, will be competing in the first ever Bible Bee this year. It's a brand new competition, based on the National Spelling Bee concept, but it's all about the Bible. The kids will be competing in Phoenix on September 12, 2009 and if they place in the top 100 for their age group nationwide, they will be invited to compete in the Nationals in Washington, D.C., November 5-6, 2009. I'm already checking out flights and hotels. Any tips for me? If anyone else would like to look into the competition, you can find info at Biblebee.org or by calling 1-888-3-BIBLE-B. Contestants can be registered up until April 30th. I'll post the church info for where we'll be as soon as I get it. It is being held in several Phoenix churches. It would be great to see some family there! Rene is still having trouble with his shoulder. He saw a pain specialist last month who couldn't believe all the stuff Rene has been through. The doctors are now saying that he may have to have another surgery to shave down the clavicle. We would appreciate prayer for direction. Thanks so much.

I'm gearing up for the end of my 6th year teaching at Chapel in the Hills. I've committed to teach again next year, and my son will finally be able to be in my class. We are looking forward to that. He's training himself to call me Mrs. Gomez instead of Mama. I had my daughter a few years back and it was great to be able to spend all those hours with her. I miss her now that she's in a totally different school from me. I would suggest to anyone that if at all possible, spend some time in your child's classroom. They are with their teachers for so much of the day, that as parents, we have no idea what is going on. And as a teacher, I know how easy it is to fall in love with these love-starved kids, and there are so many of them out there. If God has blessed you with extra time and love, get in there and help out and show God's love. The teachers will love you, the kids will love you, and whether they admit it or not, your own child will love having you in there!

Prayers Needed

As most if not all of you know that Wally (Marie) has Mylodisplastic Syndrome evolving into Mylogenisus. He has had four rounds of chemo so far and his white count is still in the basement. On thursday he started vomiting and by Sat he was running a temp of 102. We took him to the ER and he was admitted to PCU which a one step down from ICU. He received two units of blood on Sunday morning and has IV fluid and antibiotics given via his port. PCU could not get his temp down so on Monday he was transfered to the ICU. He received two more units of blood and was put on a cooling blanket. His temp spiked to 104.8. He is now getting three different kinds of antibiotics, neupogen shots every 12 hours (these will help build up his white count). His temp actually got down to 98.8 so they took him off the cooling blanket. He made it off for four hours and his temp spiked again. So at this time he is back on the cooling blanket. Tonight he was complaining of chest pain and had to be given morphine for it. As if this wasn't enough to deal with, Bert and Sandra's daughter (our granddaughter) and her boyfriend went out on a paddle boat Monday night. A storm came up and the boat over turned. Our granddaughter made it to the opposite shore safely but her boyfriend could not swim and he has not been found yet. Our granddaughter tried to get to him but the waves prevented it. She was holding on to the paddle boat. Needless to say, there have been a lot of tears between the two events. We are still praying that he will be found alive, but doubt it very much. It was very cold last night and today, but then God does work miracles. We can sure use all the prayers that you can send our way. I will try to keep everyone updated. Loran retires

Loran (Charley) retired officially on the 7th of January. The kids cooked up a surprise retirement party for the 14th of March. The hard part was keeping Loran out of town from 10AM to 5:30PM while the kids arrived and got things set up and ready. It was also our 36th anniversary so we went to Flagstaff. We did some errands and went to a movie. I had to really stall after the movie. He was trying to be nice but I knew he had about had enough of waiting on me to get through Sam's Club and the various other places I drug him to. Loran was surprised when we arrived home and opened the garage door and saw the party waiting for him in the carport. We just basically had a nice dinner and gathered around in the family room after wards for some fun stories and laughs. He has been having a great time working in his garage and wood yard and doing a few trees and various other things for people. He seems to find plenty to do. Mostly he gets to sleep nights. I will not put in my resignation from my little school job until May so we are still a little tied down.

Re-enlistment in the Marine Corps

I am Jeffrey Hardy's wife, Sheri Hardy. Jeff is Curtis Hardy's oldest son. I wanted to share our blogspot address -hangingwiththehardys.blogspot.com (see link on sidebar) and to share some news of Jeff's re-enlistment again in the Marine Corps. He has been in the Marine Corps now for 12 years and re-enlisted for another 4 years. He was also promoted to Gunnery Sgt. last year. Our 10th wedding Anniversary was this past Sunday, March 15th. We are very proud of Jeff's hard working and committment.
This is SO great to get to know you since I haven't done that at the family reunions all these years. Jeffrey and I have talked about being part of the firework's mission each year but the Military has made that impossible in years prior, I'd really like to attempt this year since we are closer than we have been in years past. Jeffrey and I have a unique roll with his battalion of about 800 military families, it keeps us very busy. Plus we are full-time students. I just have to laugh when I think of all the craziness.

Eileen Howells Daley's Obituary

Eileen Howells Daley 1963 ~ 2009 BRIGHAM CITY - Eileen Howells Daley passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 12, 2009 at her home surrounded by her loved ones. She fought a three year battle with pancreatic cancer.
Eileen was born on March 29, 1963 in Vernal, Utah, a daughter to Tom and Fay Stephens Howells. She grew up in Vernal and cherished her childhood memories there. She loved to go back to visit and to play. She graduated from Uintah High school in 1981, participating in Student Government and the Volleyball team.

Eileen married her sweetheart, Gordon Daley, in the Logan LDS Temple on August 16, 1984. They were blessed with four children: Jake, Mitch, Whitney, and Luke. She has no grandchildren yet, but expects her children to work on that.

For most of her life she was a labor and delivery nurse at LDS Hospital, which she absolutely loved. She loved her nursing friends, colleagues, and the children.

In 2000 she moved to Brigham City and found a place where her children flourished and felt like home for her. Eileen's passion was her family and she loved to spend time with them whether it was traveling, trying to pass them on the 4-wheelers in the mountains, or playing games around the table, she wanted to be with them.

She also loved making quilts for her family and left many as her legacy. She is survived by her husband, Gordon, children: Jake, Mitch, Whitney, and Luke. Her mother, Fay Howells; her siblings, Tom, LeAnn (John) Halgren, Stephen (Amber), Vivian (Scott) Gardner, Laura (Ed) Schirner, Devin (Jody), many nieces and nephews and friends who love her.

Many thanks to the staff of the Huntsman Cancer Center, especially Dr. Weiss and Mulvihill who were amazing and the staff at Alpine Hospice; Tonya, Lindsey, and Dr. Markeson who were there whenever we need them.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 17, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the Brigham City North Stake Center, 620 North 300 East, Brigham City. A viewing will be held on Monday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Gillies Funeral Chapel, 634 East 200 South, Brigham City, Utah and on Tuesday at the church from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in the Brigham City Cemetery.

Martineau Update

(Eric, Melvin, Hattie) Eric is working in Mexico, and Diane and the girls are living with Diane’s parents in Minnesota. Diane’s father was in a bad accident a year ago, and Diane’s gone back to “the farm” for a school year to help.
Jose Barry (Eric, Melvin, Hattie) is still on his mission in Guatemala. He’s working in the highlands of Guatemala with the Mayans, speaking his third language. He returns in Aug of this year.
Erica Fe (Eric, Melvin, Hattie) is in West Virginia. Her first area has a large Hispanic population, and since she is the only native Spanish speaking sister in the mission, has stayed in this area since arriving in Aug. 08. Her companions are learning Spanish.

Update on Wally Messinger

Wanted to let you know that Wally is home again from the hospital. He went into the hospital on Friday Jan. 30 and came home yesterday, Feb 12. He received 6 units of blood and 6 units of platelets. He had 4 doses of chemo but could not have them on consecutive days because his blood counts do not stay up. His white count fluctuates so much that they won't give chemo when it is down. He has to have Neupogen shots when the white count is low. His platelets also go up and down like a yo-yo so he has to get platelets for that. Then his hematocrit and hemoglobin go down and he has to get blood. He did real good on the first two chemo's but on the third one he got real sick. That was the pits. No nurse stuck her head in the door and I was to busy to push the call light as it was on the chair I sat in and I was busy helping him. I let them know that I was upset with them but I did it nicely. The last dose of Chemo went good. But then they dosed him up with meds so that he would not get sick. Next month they are going to try for the 5 days of chemo. I know one thing, sleeping on the fold out chair in the room is not comfortable and then the aides come in and turn on all the lights in the room to do his vitals. But all in all it wasn't to bad. The doctors put him on a regular neupogenic diet so the food was a little better.In case you do not know what a neupogenic diet is here is the definition. No fresh fruit or vegetables what so ever. If either one touches his food it has to be thrown away or someone else in the family has to eat it. He has to wear a mask whenever he goes out and when he is in the hospital, he is on reverse isolation, which means anyone coming in the room has to wear a mask. Sounds like fun huh?I want to thank everyone for their prayers, they are working. On his first bone marow biospy, his cancer cells were 12%, on the second bone marrow the cancer cells were 6%. Well I hope this helps to let you know what is going on.

A Memorable Trip

The Ray & Jerry(Oliver) Turley family recently took a trip to Utah. We wanted to share some of the highlights of that trip. We started off by seeing the lights at Temple Square in Salt Lake City. It was absolutely beautiful. Here is Kellie below enjoying the scenery.

The kids got to play in the snow. An exciting thing when you don't see it very often.

We sure had lots of fun with them.

The highlight of the whole trip was that we were able to attend the Temple Sealing of Amber (Butch, Oliver) & Jeremy Gintz. It was a special experience and we were so glad that we were there. Aren't they just a beautiful couple.

They were able to have their sweet little family sealed together for time & all eternity. Their daughter Ryleigh is 8 and Braydon is 6.

Later that night we had a get together to celebrate this occasion. Amber's brother Brian (Butch, Oliver) & his cute little family came to the celebration. It was great to see them & their new little baby boy.

The party was held at Amber's moms house (Becky) who is on the far left of this picture. Thanks Aunt Becky. It was a great party.

Binghampton Cemetery

It has been over 17 years since Dottie Stephens left her earthly sojourn. Her son Rick hadn't been back to the Binghampton Cemetery since she had been laid to rest there. With family going different directions, this past Thanksgiving seemed to be a perfect opportunity to visit. As the days approached prior to the trip, Rick's mind began to be flooded with memories of his mom. Fond memories, especially those of Christmas, which Dottie loved. He shared a few of those memories with me like how much she enjoyed decorating the Christmas tree. He had this great idea of placing a little Christmas Tree at her grave. He wanted to decorate the tree with ornaments which would reflect who he is now and also his mom's love for the Christmas Season. It was family that made the Season sparkle for Dottie so Rick encouraged his siblings to share this experience with him and with her. He asked them to chose an ornament of meaning for each of them which he then hung on the tree in memory of their mom.

We arrived in Tucson early evening Thanksgiving Day. We planned to place the tree Friday morning but Rick was anxious to find his mom so we set out to locate Binghampton. We arrived, as if we being lead there, Rick jumped out of the pickup, holding his hand up to me gesturing he'd be right back. In the twilight with rain falling, I watched him take off running like he heard his mom calling him home.

The journey was spiritually and emotionally inspiring.
Binghamption is a hallowed place.

Hello Family Happy Holidays and Happy New Year to all. The New Year up here has started out crazy. We are having rainy snow and it is making a very slushy mess. Black ice will be on all the roads in the morning. It's crazy I say - just crazy. All this snow is doing nothing but causing mayhem with major winds. All I am doing is praying that everyone can make it to work this week safely. Donny (Margie, Gilbert, Art, Marie) had 18 inches in his back yard. They are projecting 3 more feet thru Tuesday.

Marriage

On December 6th Karen (Eileen, Maurine) and Larry were married in a quiet, private wedding ceremony. Karen and Larry have been together for 9 years and Larry finally asked her to marry him. Her son Joseph and his wife and Mel and I were there with the Bishop and his wife. It was very sweet and we were glad Karen asked us to come. Larry was a good friend of Karen's son Joseph and this is how they met nine years ago. He has been like a father to Joe and has helped the kids with so much. The grandkids already call him Papa. We are so very happy for Karen.

Turley Christmas Tradition

We give our children an ornament every year for Christmas. Their name and the year is written on each ornament. Each child has their own box that they keep their ornaments in. Every year when we get the Christmas decorations out they are responsible for hanging their ornaments on the tree. It is fun to watch & listen as they remember the year they got certain ornaments or why they got that ornament that year. When Christmas is over they also take down each of their ornaments and carefully wrap them in paper towel or newspaper and place them back in the box for safekeeping. This is also where they keep ornaments made in school, scouts and so on. The idea is that someday when they leave home they will get to take their box of ornaments with them. We hope that as they begin to decorate their own tree someday that they will be reminded of some great Christmas memories from their childhood and home.

Messinger Update

Hi there family from "sunny" WA. I say it that way because right this minute it is raining. Imagine that. The sun was blazing about an hour ago and I see that it is trying to sneek thru those nasty rain clouds. I do have to say that the colors around here are quite beautiful. Lots and Lots or reds, yellows, oranges, and browns. I guess I will never tire of these seasons. It does get real cold about this time of year. Right now at this writing 12:14pm it is 52 degrees.

I think that if and whenever I do win the lottery I will have to become that preverbial winter visitor because I don't like the cold fall/winters up here and I don't like the spring/summer there in AZ. Now I see why people make the best of both worlds.

Now on to the update: I have been working in an Assisted Living Facility here in WA since Feb. 1, 2008 as a caregiver/med tech/RCC assistant (multitasking I'm really good at) and got a really good promotion on Oct. 23, 2008 as RCC (Resident Care Coordinator) meaning I am in management now and have never been there before. It's really exciting and confusing all at the same time because I really have not a clue what the RCC is supposed to actually do except be in charge of the schedule and the other caregivers. I'm supposed to run the nursing dept. I have an RN that I work very well with and when corporate did their audit 2 weeks ago all the number were up and the RN is only been there for 5 weeks. It's alot of hard work. The position usually requires an LPN but that is my next goal to obtain that license. I graduated Pima Community College in 1998 and have been trying to get that silly thing ever since. Life is a struggle sometimes but the good lord know talent when he sees it and works in mysterious ways. I do thank him continuously everyday.

Ok now on to other news: My daughter Shawna (Margie, Gilbert, Marie) just had to have her gallbladder removed last week. She was doing ok the last time I talked to her. I will be in Phoenix (where she lives) for Thanksgiving so then I will be able to "take care" of her.

My son Steven (Margie, Gilbert, Marie) is working in Tucson, AZ for a trucking company. He picks up brand new furniture that has been ordered by some furinture stores and delivers it to New Mexico, AZ, NV and sometimes CA. He's a very busy man.

Donny (Margie, Gilbert, Art, Marie) is the only child up here with me. He is doing great with the construction company he works for and has been working for for the last 5 years. He loves it up here. He has a girlfriend Colleen that I have worked with and introduced them and as they say the rest is history.

Well you already know about David (Matthew) my heart goes out to him. I worry about him everytime he has to go over to that country as I know the many of you do to.

I will keep you all updated of the happenings from up here in "sunny" WA.

Messinger Update

I just wanted to send a short note on the status of my family. I am the youngest son of Arthur Messinger (of San Manuel, AZ). Most of the family knows me as Matthew but I have gone by David (my middle name) since joining the military. I am currently in the Army stationed at Fort Bragg, NC. I have been in the Army for 9 years now and have progressed through the ranks to Staff Sergeant. I have been deployed twice to Iraq and once to Afghanistan. I am looking at being deployed back to Iraq within the next year or so (depending on who is elected into office this month). I have been happily married since February of 2002 to a wonderful woman named Brianna. I have custody of my son Ty (13) and 2 children with Brianna named Liahm (3) and Brock (7 months). Brianna is a Private Duty Nurse who works for a family that has a 2 year old child that has a (please excuse the spelling) treakiotomy. She has been a LPN for a year now and is going back to school in the next year to get her RN. As things change and progress in my family I will send e-mails to update you on things. I am looking for a promotion here in the Army within the next year so I will send updates on that as well. Thanks for your time and the blog that you have started as it keeps me up to date on the family "happenings". I have been out of the loop for so many years now it is nice to know what is going on in the family.

Dear Kev; Sounds like you are giving a history of my childhood. When a child in Pine we had no electric lights, indoor toilets. made our own soap, hauled ourwater, dirt roads. When I got married Papa worked for Uncle Charley for $60 a month, 12 hours a day. gas was 15 cents a gallon. Times do change and it does boggle your mind. I guess that's progress.

Run Dorothy Run

Dorothy (Kaye, Oliver) ran in the San Francisco Marathon on Oct 19th. She ran the half-marathon which is a little over 13 miles long. Alot of us saw her running at the reunion this summer preparing for the marathon. As a matter of fact this picture of her is from a little tumble she took at the reunion on one of her runs. Notice the smile on her face, she is a real trooper. Dorothy completed the run somewhere in the middle of some 36,000 runners. It was quite a trip. Her sister Jennifer, Joe and Sean all went with her as her support system. Dorothy we are so proud of you! What a great thing to say you have accomplished.

Messinger Update

Doris Messinger (Marie) wanted to let us know about something that happened to her daughter Michelle. On September 27th, she ruptured her Achilles tendon, and on October 9th she had to have surgery, when they got in there they found more damage then the MRI showed. The tendon had completely pulled away from the bone, so the loose screw she had in her head ended up in her heel along with another one to reattach the tendon to the bone. Now whenever she flies she will set off the metal detector.

She will be off work for at least six weeks, she has a walking cast, but cannot put any weight on her foot, she can only use it for balance. She goes back to the doctor next month and they will take the cast off and she will wear a boot, and then will probably have physical therapy. Thank goodness one of my coworkers had a wheelchair and loaned it to us, because she is getting around with crutches and this wheelchair.

Hang in there Michelle. We are hoping for a speedy recovery.

INTRODUCTION

When I was a little boy and I prepared talks for Sunday school, my mother would help me write those talks and then would make me memorize them. Thosewere painful memories. I cried and whined a lot, but she didn't seem tocare. After I have tried my recitation she would say, "Was that your best?And I would say "No." She would say that if I was going to do it, it wasworth doing my best. Then I would try some more and cry again and say it wastoo hard.. and she would say ,"Son, easy things make strong men weak andhard things make weak men strong." Then she would ask me if I wanted to beweak or strong...I would squirm and mumble "I wanted to be strong." and thenshe would say,,,"Ok..then let's try it again." Invariably I would quit mysniveling, get myself together and try again. When the day came for me todeliver my talk I was prepared and when it was over... I felt successful. Mymother always taught me to put my best foot forward. That was her style. She called herself a perfectionist and was proud of it.Today, I am humbled by the monumental task of being the voice that willrepresent the feelings of all you who knew Monreve Hardy as your friend,your mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. I humbly pray that mywords will make her proud and that each of you will take with you from thisplace today a feeling of peace, gratitude and completion. Let us we reflect on Monreve Hardy.

MONREVE HARDY

To her friends, she was known as Monreve (which translates to "my dream" in French), She was mother to Jerry, Teeny, Kaye and myself; and Nana by all her grandchildren and the rest of us from time to time. In her later yearshe became the icon Nana! An Icon because no one will ever replace her. She was one of a kind and nameNana made a lasting imprint on our lives. She was musical. She loved music and musical productions. She played thepiano, she sang, she conducted the choir.She was a poet..and wrote poetry with and for her grandchildren. She lovedto celebrate Christmas and was a talented decorator. She baked cookies,cinnamon rolls, bread, and pies and shared them with her friends.. Shebelieved that no day was complete if she had not helped someone. She believed in being productive and worked hard every day.

ON HER OWN TERMS

Monreve Hardy was a self reliant Christian pioneer woman deeply committed tothe principles of the gospel, and Christ was the center of her life. Shewas clear about how things should be done and never wavered. Shedemonstrated true grit in everything she set out to do. Her family creedwas never in question because she reminded us often, "As for me and my house we will serve the Lord."" and "Gods house is a houseof order."She lived life and died on her own terms. We all new that. She wasdetermined to take care of herself in her old age and never rely on herfamily. Her constant prayer was that she would endure to the end. Many of us believe that she created her remarkable passing the same way shescripted her life.

DAY SHE DIED UNCONDITIONAL LOVE

The day she had her stroke, She took me into her bedroom about 9 a.m. andsaid, "I want to get some things off my chest before I die.' She had giventhis conversation some thought and had 8 points written down. She checkedthem off as she went along. Her message was clear. She wanted me to knowthat she loved me unconditionally and she always had. She assured me thateven though she had not always agreed with my choices, she had been proud ofme all my life and that nothing I had ever done had brought her shame. Shesaid, "This is the way I feel about all members of my family." Her wordshealed my heart of the thoughts of "having let her down" and of not havingfulfilled her dreams for me.We had a good cry and a powerful expression of love. I experienced whatchildren feel when parents have hopes and dreams for them but then theygracefully give way to their individual choices and love them, just lovethem for what they are. She exemplified the prophets words, "Teach them correct principles and letthem govern themselves." and she followed the Saviors admonition ofunconditional love. All members of her family were blessed by her love. You see family was important to her..

HER FAMILY WAS IMPORTANT

Mother often said that Oliver's, our father's last words to her were ,"Keep the family together.' And she promised she would. Nana lived for herfamily. She worried about and prayed for each and every one of us. She newall our birthdays and sent cards. She was engaged with all of us and hadher opinions of each one of us. She also had her favorites which annoyedsome and embarrassed others. But that was part of what made her human. You see, she had an opinion about everything and she didn't mince words.When she got mad; you knew it. We all got our fannies chewed out from time to time.She was the queen dictator when it came right and wrong in her family. She set the standards based on gospel teachings and she taught us all, kids,grandkids, and great grandkids alike. She felt it was her job to teach us how to act whether we liked it or not;but we all knew that behind her stern guidance was a wise and loving mother.She loved the scriptures. She took in spiritual nourishment from thescriptures daily. She manifested the promise of Jesus when he said.."Blessedare those who hearken unto my precepts, and lend an ear unto my council, forthey shall learn wisdom." Our mother was a divine matriarch who governedher realm with unwavering righteousness.

HER TEMPTATION

She was human. She did not go through life without her own temptations. Sheoften told the story of her temptation with alchohol while she was a youngwoman living in Winslow. She prayed for the Savior to give her the power toresist and one evening when she was leaving the house to meet her friend ina bar, she could not turn the door knob. Her hand literally froze. Sheturned around and went into her bedroom and fell on her knees in tears andfervent prayer and gratitude. She was never tempted again. She believed inthe power of prayer and that Christ had intervened in her life.

CHRIST TEACHINGS CENTRAL, TALKING WITH THE SAVIOR

She knew the Savior and the Savior knew her. She had faith in Jesus Christ and in His atonement and she relied completelyon Him, trusting in His infinite power, intelligence, and love. Christ was at center of her life and we all know that she conversed with Himdaily. Recently when mother's sister, Aunt Letty visited her, she accusedmother of talking to herself. In an indignant way mother retorted that shewas not talking to herself but talking to the Savior.We all know stories when she was trying to fix something and an idea wouldcome into her mind from nowhere and she knew that was Oliver helping heralong. She felt an abiding helping presence of my father all of her days.Monreve Hardy lived alone for 36 years but said she never felt loneliness. Iused to visualize her, alone in her bedroom, curled up and watching TV. Ifelt bad for her and would surround her with light. One time I asked her ifshe ever felt lonely and she said "Why should I feel lonely when I amaccompanied by your father and the Savior. That is pretty good company,don't you think?" Recently we were talking "about making the bed" and she said that the firstthing she does in the morning is make her bed, then gets on her knees andtalks to the Savior and then that began a conversation that lasted allday...She was a woman who prayed without ceasing.

HER SENSE OF HUMOR

Mother was not pious and had a great sense of humor. A couple of daysbefore she passed she called Maureen to get her opinion on some new sleepingpills she had received. She was reading the side effects about all thehorrible things that could happen. Then she read that people could dothings in their sleep, like drive a car or even have sex withoutremembering. Nana said, "That settles it, I am going to take the pills and hide thekeys!"

LAST DAY PARTY

On her last day, after her talk with me she said that we were going to havea party. She had invited her best lady friends and we were going to decorateMexican. Mother as usual and knew how she wanted things and Ray, Jerry, Tuliand I helped her put everything together.We had the dinner on the patio. She had invited Fran, Nelda, Marsha,Florence and Maureen. Mother was giddy and humerous. She told stories of herchildhood in Strawberry; of hauling and cutting logs with her youngerbrother, Joe and Old Brownie, their horse. She talked of Grandpa Lufkin getting caught by the regulators with hiswhiskey still in Strawberry, ..of how after the still had been destroyed,she and her sisters later separated the corn from the molasses as they satby the fire. She said that she had never had much but had never needed much because theSavior always provided for her needs. Mother knew that the important things were not things.Then she went on to tell about the Pine/Strawberry fire department making arequest for a donation. She sent in her donation with a letter, which sheread it to us. It truly expresses her wry sense of humor. .

TO THE PINE/STRAWBERRY FIRE DEPARTMENT:

In reply to your request for a contribution to the fire department, I wantto inform you that the present conditions of my bank account make it almostimpossible to contribute. My shattered financial condition is due tofederal laws, state laws, corporation laws, municipal laws, mother in lawsand outlaws. Through these laws I am compelled to pay a business tax, an assessment tax,a head tax, a poll tax, a school tax, until every nerve in my body is taxed.I am required to get a business license, a truck license, a hunting license,a fishing license, a buying license, to say nothing of a marriage licenseand a dog license. I am also required to contribute to every society andorganization which the genius man is capable of bringing to life: women'srelief, the unemployment, the gold diggers relief, the red cross, the purplecross, and the double cross. Simply because I do not donate to something or other, I am boycotted, talkedabout, held up, held down, and robbed until I am almost ruined. I can tellyou honestly that for except for a miracle that has just happened I couldnot send you this check. The wolf that came to the door just had pups. Isold them so here is the money for the fire department. Thank you for yourfine services. The little ol lady on the hill.

SHE DIED

After she read this story we joked about snipe hunting and other things.Then her friends left. She started helping Tuli with the dishes and thenwalked into the living room where Ray and I were sitting. She sat down andhad a stroke. She was airvacked to Phx. and I don't believe that she reallyever came back to clear awareness; even though she didn't officially die inthe hospital until the next day.

SWEET SURRENDER

In the hospital room, for those of us left at her side, and there were about20, there was no suffering, no pain, no regrets. There was a spirit of sweet surrender. We all knew that her time had comeand that she moved on to where she wanted to go. As we stood in that sacred circle we felt grateful that we had been lovedand taught by her.We celebrated her passing. We knew that when her spirit left "her well used"body she burst into a joyous expansion of light where she was greeted by allthose who loved her and anxiously waited for her....Oliver, Ellis Lynn, Zelda, Aunt Bobbie, Uncle Jack and a host of others.What a great reunion it must have been.and ...........We know that she experienced Christ's loving embrace as hesaid, ¨Well done my good and faithful servant.¨And so there we stood and she was gracefully gone.So what of us that are left? Certainly she made her spiritual and psychic imprint on the lives of all ofus; friends and family alike. Would all members of Monreve Hardy family please stand. We are many andcarry the genetic imprint she left us and the familial relationship thatinfluenced our lives. We are proud to be the descendents and the legacy ofsuch a great woman. You may sit down now.We members of this family want to thank you in Pine Ward for taking care ofour mother. She has been a member here in her childhood and for the past 35years. She has served in many positions. We thank her line of home teachersand visiting teachers who have taken a personal interest in her wellbeing.You have been angels in her life.We know that mother bore her testimony and paid her tithes the Sunday beforeshe made her transition. She indeed endured to the end.

WHAT WOULD SHE SAY

What do we do with the life of Monreve Hardy. What lessons can be learned?.If she were here now, and I am sure she is...she would say:Love Christ with all your heart and follow His teachings. Pray unceasingly.Love your families, teach them the gospel, and pray for them.Work hard, do your best and vigorously serve others.Endure to the end.And what shall we in closing say to her?

Let us say, DEAR NANA You have dreamed with us and for us.You have helped us to be the best possible us we could be You have taught usChrist's way and accepted us as we are.You have been there for us to lean on, to share with, and to count on.We couldn't have asked for a better mother, grandmother or a better friend.We will not say, "Rest in peace" because we know that is not your style.We won't say, "don't worry about us." because we know you will.We will do our best to follow your example .We were blessed by your presence in our lives and we will all see you soon.

We say these things, as you would have it.

The funeral service for Nana was lovely.

The coffin turned out beautiful. It was made with love by many of her family members. They included; Jim, Richard, Howard, Kellie, Carrie, & Jaden Turley. Kevin Rogers, Terrie Farnes, & Teeny Hardy. It was truly a 'Labor of Love'.

Stephens family update

Gaye (Beery, Alonzo, Maureen) reports that they had a fabulous weekend, on October 18th my husband, Beery turned 44 years old. He was encouraged by his nephew, Jarrett Stephens (Bobby, Alonzo, Maureen) to compete in the Pumpkin Run triathalon. There were 450 people competing from all parts of the United States. Without triathalon training Beery's start - transition and finish time was about 1hr and 46 minutes. Jarrett came in a little faster at 1hr and 35 minutes. This was their first competition and with the cheering from Alonzo, Nance, Bobby, Marlene and wifies Stacie and Gaye, the day was an overall blast.

Bobby (Alonzo, Maureen) reports that they both started with a 1/2 mile swim and then a 12 mile bike ride and finished up with a 3 mile run. Jarrett came in 8th in his class and Beery came in 17th in his class.. Both did exceptionally well.. We had a great time ... I think they have started a new family tradition...

Women of Faith

My 12 year old daughter, Ashley, and I just went on an exciting trip to Anaheim, CA, for the Women of Faith teen-aged girls conference called "Revolve!" It was so much fun hanging out with about 25 girls from the age of 11 through 17. There were 7 leaders with these 25 girls. My friend says she feels like she has to hang with them and just absorb their energy by osmosis! We had a blast and God protected us on the road, as we drove three 12-passenger vans. I saw both of the other vans almost get side-swiped by semi trucks and the van I was in never had any trouble. God is awesome! It was a wonderful time for my daughter and I and I'm glad we got to have this time before she "really" becomes a teen! Love, Linda (Gilbert, Marie)

Ludwig happenings

Eileen and Mel Ludwig (Maurine) just came back from Cedar City, Utah from the blessing of our new great grandaughter, Payten Rodriguez (Stephen,Barbara, Eileen ,Maurine) and also the Baptism of Jayce Owens (Joseph,Karen,Eileen, Maurine)another great grand son and 8 hours after we got home we got the news of the birth of Jude Elison another great grandson (Melanie, Barbara, Eileen, Maurine) in St George,Utah. So we will be going back to St George for his blessing on the 2nd of November.

Congratulations on all of those exciting happenings! I would love to include a picture of each of them if you could send them my way.

While doing some genealogy Mel discovered that John Elison's, (Barbara's son in law ) third great grandfather is a brother to my second great grandfather on the Haws side of the family. They are sons to Gilbreth Haws and Hannah Whitcomb. William Wallace Haws is the 7th child and Gilbreth Oliver Haws is the 14th child. Interesting huh?

Update on Rene's surgery

Linda Gomez (Gilbert, Marie) here with an update on Rene's shoulder surgery. He had the surgery on Weds., Oct. 1. He came through the surgery with flying colors. The last two times, the doctor did laproscopic and only focused on the shoulder bones. This new doctor actually cut into his arm and looked at the bicep muscle. He found a tear in Rene's muscle and fixed it, as well as tightening up the bicep muscle. We are hoping this will be the fix he has been needing. The doc said there wasn't much wrong with the bones and such. We have his follow up today, to remove the stitches and we'll find out if he has to have therapy and all that jazz. I'll keep you all updated! Thanks to those of you who have called and sent e-mails. You've really impressed Rene in thinking about what family is all about.

Wally Messinger

This is an update from Judy (Wally, Marie) regarding her husband Wally.

On Sept 26th I got a phone call from Legacy Heart to get Wally to the ER as soon as possible to have him evaluated for low blood count. He was admitted immediately. The first night he got 2 units of blood and Bert stayed with him. I stayed for the remainder of the time. He had 2 units of blood on the first night. 2 units platelets between Sept 28 and Oct 1. He had a bone marrow biospy, CT scan and they tried to do an MRI (but Wally was to claustriphobic for that)and chest xray, IV antibiotics. Almost forgot he also had blood cultures drawn out of both arms. On Wed, Oct 1 at 8:15 pm he was discharged. We left the hospital, got somethingto eat and came home. Wally was getting ready for bed. Brenda called up the stairs and said "Mom the phone is ringing". Joe answered the phone and gave it to me. It was the hospital calling and told us to bring Wally back that he had an infection in his blood. So back we went. This time there were no rooms upstairs so they put him in ICU as a regular patient. He was admitted at 11:55pm on Oct 1. He got 2 more units of blood and 4 units of platelets during this stay. The results on the biospy came back. He has Myeldosplastic Syndrome, evolving into myelogranous leukemia. During the 3rd unit of platelets given on Sunday, Wally had a reaction. (platelets are not suppose to have white cells in them and apparently this one did). His Dr. said he was going to put him on a ventilator. I lost it and called Bert and Brenda. At this point he was upgraded to an ICU patient. He was hooked up to a heart monitor, had a catheder put in and was getting IV antibiotics, shots to help build up his blood cells, Blood sugar taken every 4 hours and insulin given, Blood pressure taken all the time (he has bruises from the cuff), he was getting breathing treatments, in other words, the full ICU treatment. His bed could even weigh him. On Sunday they also took him down for a CT Scan with contrast, when he went down for the CT scan, he looked like hell, when he came back he looked great. I told them that next time he did this I was going to call them, because whatever was in the IV contrast seemed to make him better. I said that it went in as iodine but the Lord changed it. He was suppose to get a Mediport on Monday and go home but his Platelets were down to 26,000 so they gave him his 4th bag of platelets and schelduled the Mediport for Tuesday at 7 am. Tuesday morning his platetes were still at 26,000 so he had to have more platelets (his 5th bag), he finally went to surgery at 11 am with the 6th bag of platelets which he got during surgery. After he recovered from the surgery, which was about 9 that night, he ate some scrambled eggs and went to sleep. Wednesday, he wanted up, so up he got. He was doing great so his Dr discharged him. Brenda came and got us at 2 pm and we went straight to his Drs office for a 2:30 appointment. He goes back on Monday for his first Chemotherpy and will get Chemo Mon - Fri then will start again next month. He gets shots to build up his blood. On the 24th we are taking him back to one of his Dr. for a PET scan because he has nodules in his stomach and lungs and Dr wants to make sure they are not cancer. I hope this answers any questions you might have. If not email me and I will try to answer them. We love you guys and thank you for all your prayers. I will try to keep you updated.

Monreve Hardy has passed away

For those of you who do not know Nana very well she is 89 years old and still lived on her own. She did the maintenance on her house & her own yard work. She still drove herself everywhere and she was very independent. Yesterday she had an early dinner at her home where she had invited 9 of her friends to come & join her. Her son Butch who lives out of the country is here visiting and she wanted her friends to meet him. Her daughter Jerry Lee was also there. It was said that she was like a school girl having her friends over for a party. Shortly after her friends left she had a stroke. She was taken by helicopter from her home in Pine to the Mayo Hospital in Scottsdale. She suffered another stroke this afternoon and was placed in ICU. We just want everyone to know how special she is and how loved she is. Many of her family members were at the hospital throughout the day. All 4 of her children were there today, Jerry Lee, Kaye, Teeny, & Butch. Richard and I had the chance to go ourselves tonight. The family put this in the Lord's hands and rejoice in knowing that he has a plan for her. Her husband Oliver died many years ago. I am not sure exactly when but I want to say close to 35 years ago. We know it will be a joyous reunion for them. Love you Nana. By the way, the picture below was taken at the Family Reunion this summer where she came and camped in a tent on her own. Isn't that amazing!

Prayers are needed

Monreve (Oliver) has suffered from a stroke. She was flown to the Mayo Hospital last night. She had a blood clot in her neck & part of it had broken off and traveled up into the area of her brain. It has affected her speech, memory and vision. Kevin (Teeny,Oliver) & Mitch (Terrie,Teeny, Oliver) & Ben (Kaye, Oliver) were at the hospital & were able to administer a blessing. Butch & Jerry Lee were with her when it happened and that was a blessing as well. It is too early to know the long term effects of this but the family asks that you all keep her in your prayers. Trevon Turley (Richard, Jerry, Oliver) submitted a poem into a creative poetry contest. His poem was chosen to be published in a book of poetry by children. The book is called 'A Celebration of Poets' & his poem is titled 'My Sister'. His parents are very proud of him.

Dwayne has been serving as the President of this great family organizaion for the past 3 years with Stan as his Vice President. We wanted to thank Dwayne for his great years of service and to let him know that we appreciate him very much! Stan has become our new President with Richard Turley (Jerry, Oliver) serving as Vice President. We are excited to see what Stan & Richard will bring to the reunion and want to offer our support to them. Here is a small blurb from our President which will be in the newsletter that will be coming out soon.

I have many many very fond memories of reunions of yesteryear and hope we can continue to only add more happy memories to the archives of history. The greatest of memories are those that are EARNED by everyone.
As with everything in life we feel more a part of things when we serve and sacrifice for them. We encourage everyone to sign up to help out with the fireworks sales next July. Put it on your calendar NOW, ask for the time off work NOW and come out and help the last week in June. It is a lot of hard work but it is also a lot of fun and you really get to know other family members. It is worth any time you can give. The family will help with gas and lodging and food so start planning now to take the time.

Melvin & Denna

Melvin (Hattie) & Denna report that they had a wonderful Labor Day. They spent it laboring at the mission office. Missionaries don't get holidays off.

We had the mother, daughter back to school Relief Society enrichment day and it was really fun. They had a brunch that was wonderful. They had a fashion show for the children to show off their new school clothes and a fun activity making and decorating journals that was fun for everyone.

Josh and Laurie Brown had a baby girl August 27th. Lindy was born on the 25th but they missed her birthday. They named her Lucie Miraya. Her middle name is named after Eric's daughter Miraya so she has a little cousin named after her. How exciting for Miraya.

Our granddaughter Erica, Eric's oldest girl entered the MTC on the 3rd of September after spending two weeks in Mexico with her mother and Matthew, her boyfriend. They decided not to get married now, but he is planning to wait for her and go to school while she fulfills her mission. He just returned from Portugal at the beginning of the summer.

Our great granddaughter Tenley is growing and is so much fun. She is reaching for everything now and can sit up alone. We haven't seen her since the end of July, but she is a really good, happy baby and she has just about caught up on her development after such a difficult start. She is off the charts size-wise. She came, off the charts, and she is growing well. She reaches for everything now and everything goes in her mouth. We are so grateful for her and that she is doing so well.

Melvin and I are both doing well. We are truly being blessed health wise. We have neither one missed a day at the mission office because we have been sick. Melvin ditches regularly now. He gets his work done so fast that he runs out of things to do. He often comes in at noon and then has all his work done by two. His years working for the IRS have given him skills that just make him very efficient.
